BIOGRAPHY

WILLIE MAE THOMAS-ELMORE 

Willie Mae Elmore is a life long resident of Port Arthur, Texas. She attended the Port Arthur Independent school district and graduated from Lincoln High School in 1967.  She graduated Lamar University nursing school, LVN and RN, programs, also graduated from Prairie View University, with a Bachelors of Science in Education and the California College of Health Science with at Master of Science in Health Administration.

She started her nursing career at St. Mary Hospital in 1970 where she started the first kidney unit in Jefferson County. She then worked for the City of Port Arthur Health Dept for one year.  After the city, she became the school Nurse for DeQueen School, where she started the first elementary drill team in 1978.  Willie Mae was then recruited to Park Place Medical Center in 1979 to become the ICU/CCU Director.  From there she was promoted to the position of Director of Nursing.  While at Park Place, Willie Mae was instrumental in starting their open heart program, the skilled nursing unit and the first mobile cardiovascular screening program in the city.

In 2005 she hired in as a Nursing Instructor at Lamar State College.  Presently she is the Chief Clinical Officer for Promise Hospital of Southeast Texas. She is also a member of Delta Sigma Theater Sorority, Member of the PAISD School Board, Member of the NAACP, the M.L. K. Support Group of SE Texas, and a Board of Director for the North Port Arthur Rotary.

Willie Mae has been active in the community for many years. A few of her contributions are; past president of the Mid & South county American Heart Association, and was recognized as the Nurse Volunteer of the year for the state of Texas in 2003. Se was the member of the Board of Directors for the American Cancer Society, Recognized as the first IASIS Chairman’s award in 2002.  Recognized by the Port Arthur Chapter of Delta Sigma Theater for the Medicine award in 2002, Nurse Educator award from Lamar Nurses Association, Bridge Builders award from the Prairie View Alumni club, the Unsung Hero award from Nick Lampson and the Outstanding Underserved Market award from the American Heart Association, Who’s Who Among Africans in Port Arthur and recognized as Port Arthur Unsung Hero Award for the Port Arthur News..  She is currently serving her 11^th year on the Port Arthur Board of Trustees has served as the President for five years.

Willie Mae is a motivational speaker and been recognized at the city and state level for her outstanding presentations. 

She is the organizer of the Port Arthur Congregational Health Ministry.  Willie Mae is a published poet and the author of her first book, “Under This Black Skin.”
